Anil (Victor Bannerjee) and Renu (Sharmila Tagore) are married and very much in love with each other. One day, Anil and Renu were returning from a mandir and they met with an car accident, in which Renu was seriously injured and was hospitalized. That time Renu was preganant. Due to accident Renu lost her child and was told that she would never become mother again. This was a great shock to her as she was very fond of children. Due to this she started behaving in abnormal way, in dolls she used to see children.
Anil was very disturbed at Renu’s state of mind. He did not favour in adopting a child as he believed that it would not have his blood and also because it held sad memories of the past. At last Renu suggested that Anil should hire a woman to give birth to his child, who would after birth give the child to them and take money for the same.
Now, Anil started hunting for such a woman. At last, Anil met Chanda (Shabana Azmi) who was a prostitute. Chanda was willing to offer her services but for a price.
Anil, Chanda and Renu left for a hill station. Renu treated Chanda as her younger sister and tried ways to bring Anil and Chanda close but Anil who loved Renu very much was not very attracted towards her. But one day certain circumstances however forced Anil and Chanda together and Chanda became pregnant. This turn of event caused Anil too to be happy with Chanda, but it gave Renu a little cause for anxiety and jealousy.
Chanda gave birth to a son. Renu and Anil were very happy. Renu was always with the child and looked after him like her own. Chanda had a change of heart and refused to give the child. Renu understood the love of mother for her child and gave permission to Chanda to take her child with her. Now when Chanda came back, she went to one of her customers and requested him to give his name to the child. He told Chanda that he could not do that. Also, what would she tell her son when he grew up and ask who his father is?
Now what was Chanda’s fate?
What happened to the child?
